Fayyaz Ismail to contest MDP's 2028 presidential primary
Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and former Vice President Faisal are rumoured to be considering a bid for the presidency.
Fayyaz Ismail, Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), on Saturday declared his decision to contest the party's primary for the 2028 presidential election.
Fayyaz had previously expressed interest in pursuing the presidency during an interview last week but had not confirmed his intentions. On Saturday, he informed MDP National Assembly members via a WhatsApp group of his decision and sought their support.
Speculation about other potential candidates within the MDP continues. Party President and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and former Vice President Faisal Naseem are rumoured to be considering a bid for the presidency.
Meanwhile, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that he has not yet made a decision regarding the 2028 election but indicated that party leaders would be informed when he does.
Additionally, former President Abdulla Yameen has announced his intention to run in the 2028 presidential election if he no longer faces any charges.
