PNC membership nears 100,000, Abdul Raheem says
The sharp increase in membership is attributed to public acceptance of President Muizzu’s policies, Abdul Raheem said.
Ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) has received 97,000 valid membership applications, with the goal of reaching 100,000, PNC Chairman and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said Saturday.
“We have now received 97,000 membership forms. Of these, more than 75,000 members have already been registered,” Abdul Raheem said during a public address during its internal elections on Saturday.
President Mohamed Muizzu had previously stated that he aimed to enrol 75,000 members into the PNC by the end of its first year. To meet this goal, the party conducted membership campaigns across various parts of the Maldives over the past four to five months.
“President Muizzu tasked us with building the party to reach 75,000 members. However, the response has exceeded expectations. We are hopeful of reaching 100,000 members soon,” Abdul Raheem added.
The PNC chairman noted that the Elections Commission’s procedural requirements include processing membership forms and addressing complaints, which can take time. Once these processes are completed, additional forms will be submitted, positioning the PNC as the first political party in the Maldives to reach 100,000 members, he said.
Providing historical context, Abdul Raheem stated:
-
The PNC had only 3,022 members when it came to power.
-
The sharp increase in membership is attributed to public acceptance of President Muizzu’s policies.
-
President Muizzu’s governance and leadership have strengthened the party's position.
“The real foundation of the PNC’s success lies in the policies of President Dr Muizzu. The growing support for the PNC reflects the trust in his leadership,” Abdul Raheem concluded.
