The Supreme Court was scheduled to hear a case at 11 am on Wednesday regarding interim orders to halt impeachment proceedings and other actions against judges under the recently amended constitution. The suspensions took place shortly before the hearing.
Prior to this, the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC)-majority parliament passed an amendment reducing the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five, requiring the removal of two sitting judges.
