A journalist was arrested on Tuesday during protests outside Parliament against the government-backed media regulation bill.
Police detained Leevan Ali Nasir, a journalist with Adhadhu newspaper and a member of the Maldives Media Council. Video footage shows three police officers restraining him before placing him under arrest.
Journalists began gathering outside Parliament from 8:30 a.m. to protest the bill, which is under committee review. Demonstrations were briefly suspended in the afternoon before resuming later in the evening.
Crowds returned to the area after the rally was called, with journalists continuing their protest against the proposed legislation. Several journalists sustained injuries when police used force to disperse demonstrators.
