Social media activist Shammoon Jaleel was released on Sunday after spending 10 days in custody following his arrest during a protest organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party.

Shammoon, also known as Lucas, was arrested on the 14th of this month and later remanded for 10 days.

His release was confirmed by his legal counsel, Imthiyaz Fahmy, in a post shared on X.

The protest was held near the MDP headquarters under the leadership of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

According to reports, clashes with police began near the residence of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

A total of 10 individuals, including eight men and two women, were arrested during the demonstration.

Seven detainees were later released, while three individuals were remanded. Lucas received the longest remand period among those detained.

The Maldives Police Service said those arrested were accused of obstructing police officers in the performance of their duties and disobeying lawful orders.

The protest was organised to call for the release of journalists from Adhadhu and to protest against restrictions on press freedom.

Journalists Leevan Ali Nasir and Mohamed Shahzan were arrested earlier this month for allegedly violating a court order related to a documentary published by the outlet.

Leevan was released on Friday after completing his sentence, while Shahzan remains in custody.

In connection with the same case, Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Managing Editor Hassan Mohamed have also been charged with defamation.

The Criminal Court of Maldives has issued a gag order prohibiting direct or indirect discussion relating to the case.
