ACC sent 49 cases to PG in 2022; charges filed in 5

According to the report, the highest number of cases were filed with the ACC from Male. A total of 267 cases were registered in the city.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said on Tuesday that the Prosecutor General’s Office decided to file charges in only five of the 49 cases forwarded to them for duty prosecution.

ACC released its annual report for 2022 on Tuesday. Going by the manner in which the cases were investigated and charged, according to the report:

  • 49 cases were filed for duty prosecution

  • This includes a total of 96 cases involving 111 accused 

  • The PG office accepted five cases, including a total of 22 charges, and 14 cases were returned

According to the ACC report, procurement-related cases were the highest number of cases filed last year. Thus:

  • A total of 486 cases were registered with the commission last year 

  • Of these, 149 were procurement-related

In addition, the next highest number of submissions were:

  • 90 cases related to use of public funds and materials

  • 79 employment-related cases

  • 49 cases pertaining to leases and land

  • 20 cases related to houses

  • 13 issues related to pay and allowances

  • 10 cases related to leased islands

  • According to the report, the highest number of cases were filed with the ACC from Male. A total of 267 cases were registered in the city.

Apart from Male', the highest number of cases have been registered:

  • 35 cases pertaining to Laamu atoll

  • 27 cases pertaining to Gaafu Alifu atoll

  • 18 cases pertaining to Addu 

Last year, the agency had evaluated 461 cases and completed the evaluation process in 296 cases. Thus:

  • At that stage, it was decided to investigate 142 cases

  • 138 cases were decided during the investigation process

Last year, the ACC disposed of 434 cases. These include:

  • 429 cases in which corruption was found to be non-cognizable 

  • Five cases in which corruption were found to be involved

During the investigation process, the agency went across the country and abroad and worked on cases, the report said. According to the report, the statements of three persons were recorded in connection with four cases during which they went to a local embassy abroad.

At the end of last year, a total of 1,585 cases were pending with the ACC, the commission said in its report. These include:

  • 485 cases pending in evaluation stage 

  • 1,100 cases pending during investigation stage
