Ministry says doesn't keep data of fish export rejects

"The numbers rejected from fish exports are not obtained and recorded by the ministry with regard to any of the fishing companies involved," the minister said.

Fisheries minister Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan has said that the amount of fish that are not bought or rejected by the buyer-country is not maintained by the ministry.

The minister made the statement in a written reply to a question by Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed. The reply was heard in the Parliament on Tuesday.

The MP asked the minister:

  • Seeking details on the countries and quantities of fish exports to the Maldives 

  • He also asked them to provide details of the exported fish that are rejected

According to the statistics sent by the minister to parliament regarding the MP’s questions:

  • Maldives exports most fish to Thailand

  • In 2021, 68% of Maldives' fish exports were sold to Thailand as frozen fish

  • The next highest export of fish is to Japan and Mauritius

According to the minister, the ministry does not take care of the number of fish sent back or rejected from the fish exported to these countries.

"The numbers rejected from fish exports are not obtained and recorded by the ministry with regard to any of the fishing companies involved," the minister said.
