Abdulla Shahid, President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), on Friday expressed concerns over the amendments to the Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) Regulation on Foreign Currency and Money Changer Regulation.

In a statement, Shahid highlighted the potential economic repercussions of implementing such changes without adequate consultation with stakeholders, particularly those in the tourism sector.

"The government's move to amend @MMA_Maldives Regulation on Foreign Currency and Money Changer Regulation without adequate consultation with relevant stakeholders risks inflicting serious harm on the economy, especially the largest industry in the #Maldives - Tourism," said Shahid.

He emphasised the importance of supporting businesses of all sizes to ensure economic stability and sustainability.

"Businesses and enterprises are the backbone of our economy. The government of Maldives must ensure that any major policy changes are thoughtfully planned and implemented to protect micro, small, medium, and large enterprises," Shahid stated.

The opposition leader also warned against policies that could undermine entire industries, suggesting that such measures would not align with the public interest.

"Attempts to demolish an entire industry must not be perceived as siding with the people. In fact, such attempts at achieving short-term political gains will destroy livelihoods," he said.

Shahid urged President Mohamed Muizzu and the government to engage in dialogue and adopt a collaborative approach.

"I urge President @MMuizzu and the government of Maldives to prioritise dialogue and adopt a collaborative approach for the sake of the country," he concluded.
