A major milestone was reached on Monday with the signing of the Kulhudhuffushi Commercial Port Development Project, aimed at transforming the port into a logistics hub for the four northernmost atolls of the Maldives.
The agreement was signed between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs at a ceremony held Monday morning. MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan signed on behalf of the company, while Minister Mohamed Saeed represented the Ministry.
Following the signing, both agencies emphasised that the project would unfold in several phases. The expansion will significantly boost the port’s capacity and modernise its cargo handling systems.
A key component of the development includes the establishment of secure storage facilities for perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables—an important step to ensure food security and efficiency in delivery across the region.
Officials noted that this initiative marks the beginning of a larger vision: establishing a scheduled freight transportation network connecting the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
