
Budget records MVR 1.3 billion surplus as debt repayments reach MVR 5.1 billion
The amount spent on debt servicing increased by MVR 1.8 billion compared to the same period last year.
The government has recorded a budget surplus of MVR 1.3 billion, with debt repayments totalling MVR 5.1 billion so far this year, according to the Weekly Fiscal Development Report released by the Ministry of Finance as of 12 June 2025.
The amount spent on debt servicing increased by MVR 1.8 billion compared to the same period last year. Despite this rise, the government has reduced overall expenditure through ongoing restraint policies.
As of 12 June, the state had spent a total of MVR 20.6 billion from the budget, marking an 8.7 percent decrease from the same period in 2024.
On the revenue side, total income including grants reached MVR 17.0 billion—an increase of 6.0 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Ministry stated that the combination of higher revenue and controlled spending has resulted in the current budget surplus.
