More than 3,000 international flights have operated at N. Maafaru International Airport since it began operations in December 2019, according to Island Aviation.

Speaking at the completion ceremony of the Maafaru Airport Development Project on Tuesday, Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the airport has handled over 250,000 passengers and a total of more than 9,000 flights to date.

The airport’s runway, developed with support from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), has now been upgraded to Code E level and was officially inaugurated at the event.

Island Aviation also announced that a project is underway to expand the airport’s aircraft parking area. Once completed, it will allow parking for up to 30 private jets simultaneously. Maafaru Airport currently accommodates the second largest number of private jets in the Maldives.

Plans have also been announced to expand the passenger terminal. The development will include the construction of lounges and other facilities to bring the terminal up to international operating standards.

Island Aviation stated that discussions are ongoing with international airlines to begin scheduled flights to Maafaru. The airport is expected to play a significant role in supporting tourism and connectivity in Noonu Atoll and the surrounding region.
