No concern over Maldives’ debt repayments as economy expands, president says
He stated that the government was meeting both external and domestic debt obligations without resorting to printing money.
President Mohamed Muizzu said on Wednesday that the Maldivian economy is growing steadily and that there is no concern regarding outstanding debts.
Speaking at a rally organised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at the party’s main camp in Malé, Muizzu said his administration was focused on fulfilling the commitments made to the public while maintaining fiscal discipline.
“We are doing all this to rebuild the damaged economy we inherited. Our economy is now moving at a steady pace, on the right path. There is nothing to worry about,” the President said.
He stated that the government was meeting both external and domestic debt obligations without resorting to printing money. “We are paying whatever debt we owe, and we are also planning for future debts. We will settle them without any worries,” he added.
Muizzu also confirmed that negotiations with China on debt relief had been finalised and agreements signed. The announcement follows remarks made by the Chinese Ambassador at a ceremony in Malé marking China’s National Day.
The President reiterated his pledge to deliver on electoral promises, saying several projects had already begun, while others were being restarted or nearing completion.
“I remember all the promises I made to the people. I am working to fulfil them with sincerity. Each day, new work is starting and some projects that were halted are now resuming,” he said.
Muizzu concluded by urging the public to continue cooperating with the government’s efforts.
