MVR 17 billion allocated for salaries, allowances in 2026 budget

The Finance Ministry has presented a total budget of MVR 64.2 billion for 2026.

The proposed state budget for 2026 includes MVR 17 billion for salaries, allowances, and pensions — an increase of MVR 2.4 billion compared to the current year’s allocation.

According to figures included in the budget, MVR 8.6 billion has been earmarked for salaries and wages, MVR 6.1 billion for allowances, and MVR 2.3 billion for pensions. In total, this represents an increase from the MVR 14.6 billion allocated in the 2025 budget, which included MVR 6.8 billion for salaries, MVR 5.7 billion for allowances, and MVR 2.1 billion for pensions.

An additional MVR 1.7 billion has been included in the 2026 budget for the continuation of pay harmonisation across the public sector.

The increase covers salary adjustments for employees in the civil service, judiciary, and local councils who received the revised pay on Saturday.

The budget estimates total revenue and grants at MVR 40.4 billion, including MVR 31.3 billion in tax revenue, MVR 8.7 billion from other income sources, and MVR 373.6 million in foreign aid.

Total expenditure is projected at MVR 49.2 billion, with MVR 8.8 billion required to finance the budget deficit. Recurrent expenditure accounts for 62 percent of the total budget, amounting to MVR 39.9 billion.
