A project to develop a fish market and local market complex in Malé has been awarded for MVR 126.3 million.

The contract for the development of the Malé Wet Market Complex on the site of the current local market has been awarded to Trusteng Maldives Pvt Ltd.

The agreement was signed by Trusteng Maldives Managing Director Mohamed Abdul Hadi. Permanent Secretary Mohamed Shamil signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry of Construction.

According to the agreement, the project will be completed within six years.

The development plan includes a six-storey wet market complex with a basement for parking.

Under the plan, the ground level will include a fish market, while the first, second and third floors will be used for a vegetable market. A food court is planned for the fourth floor.

Information available in the business directory does not indicate that Trusteng Maldives Pvt Ltd has been issued a business licence by the government. There is also no record of any registered business under that name.

Company records show that Abdul Hadi is the sole shareholder of the company. Trusteng Maldives was classified as a small business on 7 June.

Plans to develop a fish market and local market complex on the site of the existing market were first proposed when President Mohamed Muizzu served as mayor of Malé.

At the time, the plan included a fish market on the ground floor, a local market and travellers’ market on the first three floors, and a restaurant or café on the fourth floor. The project did not begin.

Malé Mayor Adam Azim said in August that the work had been delayed due to two separate agreements with different companies.

He said the first agreement was valued at $6.1 million and was signed when President Muizzu served as mayor.

According to Azim, a second agreement valued at $9.6 million was signed when the mayor’s post was vacant after Muizzu resigned to contest the presidential election.

During that period, Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh served as acting mayor.

Azim said the second agreement could have halted the project and led to the demolition of the market building.
