Ensis Fisheries has stopped providing free ice to fishermen following an increase in fuel prices and production costs.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company said the rise in fuel prices has increased the cost of producing and supplying ice.
According to the company, fuel prices rose twice between the 1st and 16th of this month, resulting in a total increase of 111%.
Ensis said fuel is the main cost in fish processing and export operations and that the increase has affected its operations.
The company said it is currently operating at a loss due to the increase in fuel costs.
Ensis also stated that it is working to address challenges faced by the fishing sector due to changes in fuel prices.
“In light of these circumstances, we are compelled to discontinue the provision of free ice to yellowfin tuna fishermen, effective immediately,” the company said.
Ensis said the decision was taken due to the cost of ice production.
The company apologised to fishermen for any inconvenience caused.
Ensis said it will continue to monitor fuel price changes and will work towards resuming the service in the future.
