Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that the government is working to establish trade arrangements with new countries.
He made the remarks on Tuesday during a press conference held at the President’s Office.
Saeed said import markets are expanding as part of efforts to address disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
He noted that new sources of imports are being explored, including Indonesia and Malaysia, for goods that were not previously sourced from those markets.
The minister said the Free Trade Agreement with China will also support access to goods.
He added that the government is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen trade relations with countries in East Asia.
“We are also trying to move forward with some African markets,” Saeed said.
He stated that improving trade links will require stronger connections by sea and air, and that work has begun with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
“For example, Africa has extensive aviation networks. If they start connecting to the Maldives, it will create cargo capacity. When both aspects develop together, it will be easier to sustain,” he said.
Saeed said the government’s approach is to build long-term trade links while addressing current challenges.
