The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch has introduced a country-specific rating for the Maldivian tuna fishery in its latest assessment.

This is the first instance in which the programme has assigned a rating to a tuna fishery at country level.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture said the development provides an opportunity for Maldivian seafood exporters to access the North American market.

The ministry stated that the new rating would support the positioning of Maldivian tuna products in markets where sourcing standards are applied.

According to the latest recommendations, Seafood Watch has classified Maldivian tuna fisheries as sustainable. Tuna products from the Maldives have been rated as a “Best Choice”, which is the highest recommendation under the programme for the region.

The ministry said the outcome reflects measures undertaken by fishermen, processors and the government.

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Ahmed Shiyam said the rating indicates recognition of the Maldives’ fishing practices.

He added that the result reflects efforts by those involved in the sector to maintain marine resources while supporting economic activity.

The Maldives’ skipjack tuna pole-and-line fishery holds certification from the Marine Stewardship Council. The handline yellowfin tuna fishery also received certification from the same body last month.
