Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has rejected claims that PayPal services remain unavailable in the Maldives, describing the criticism as politically motivated and citing user statistics following the platform's launch.

Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office on Tuesday, Saeed said PayPal is now operating in the Maldives despite claims to the contrary.

"It feels to me that those with differing political views are trying to insist that 'No, PayPal wasn't brought in,' even after it has arrived. But PayPal is here in the Maldives now," he said.

To support his remarks, Saeed shared figures on the service's initial uptake.

According to the minister:

  • 3,280 users have linked to PayPal services.

  • 2,159 digital wallets have been activated.

"So, isn't it working?" Saeed asked.

He said there had previously been doubts about whether PayPal would launch in the Maldives because of the country's small market, but those concerns had been overcome.

Saeed also said the current rollout represents the initial phase of the service and that additional PayPal features will be introduced over time.

"The additional options available on PayPal will be introduced as we go," he said.
