Pension Office COO Shiuna suspended
Shiuna, who previously served as president of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), joined the Pension Office in 2023.
Maldives Pension Administration Office Chief Operating Officer (COO) Mariyam Shiuna has been suspended from her post.
It is unclear when the suspension took effect or why the decision was made.
Contacted for information, Shiuna said she remained an employee of the Pension Office but declined to comment on questions regarding her suspension.
Shiuna, who previously served as president of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), joined the Pension Office in 2023.
A communications official at the Pension Office, when asked whether Shiuna had been suspended as COO, said the office does not disclose information concerning individual employees. The official, however, confirmed that Shiuna was not attending the office.
“She has not been dismissed from her job,” the official said.
The official said reports concerning Shiuna had first been seen in the media and that no information regarding her suspension had been communicated internally to employees.
The Pension Office said arrangements were in place to ensure its services continued without interruption and that its operations were proceeding as usual.
The office also said it would continue to prioritise services provided to members and the security of members’ pension funds.
As COO, Shiuna’s responsibilities include overseeing and strengthening the work of the Corporate Affairs Division.
She holds a master’s degree in International Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and a Bachelor of Arts in History from London Metropolitan University. She also holds a postgraduate certificate in Politics from Birkbeck, University of London.
The development comes a month after Yazmeed Mohamed was appointed CEO of the Pension Office. Yazmeed, who resigned from the Judicial Service Commission in May, was appointed to the position last month.
The suspension also comes after changes within the Pension Office following a decision concerning MVR 2.4 billion invested by the pension fund.
Several board members and senior officials previously resigned after the Pension Office board decided to sell MVR 2.4 billion in bonds held by the fund to the Maldives Monetary Authority and use the proceeds to invest in a government bond. Those who resigned had raised concerns that the decision could adversely affect the pension fund.
