Bank of Maldives (BML) has been included in Forbes' World's Top Performing Banks 2026 ranking, compiled in partnership with market research firm Statista.
The bank is among 500 financial institutions from 89 countries recognised in the inaugural edition of the ranking, which assesses banks based on their financial performance and operational indicators.
BML's inclusion places the Maldivian financial institution alongside banks from international markets in a ranking that evaluates profitability, financial resilience, growth and operational efficiency.
The Forbes and Statista assessment measures banks against four criteria: profitability; growth and earnings quality; capital and funding resilience; and asset quality and efficiency.
The ranking draws on financial data from providers including S&P Capital IQ, independent research and information published by the banks themselves.
The 500 banks are divided into six tiers, with institutions including JPMorgan Chase, DBS, OCBC and HDFC Bank listed in the first tier.
BML has been placed in the sixth tier, which includes banks with total assets ranging from USD 3 billion to USD 10 billion. The bank was assessed against financial institutions of comparable size operating in other countries.
According to BML, the recognition reflects its financial performance, risk management practices, lending standards, sustained growth and balance sheet position.
As the national bank, BML provides banking and financing services to individuals and businesses across the Maldives. Its operations include lending, financial services and digital banking, supported by a network serving communities throughout the country.
The bank said it continues to invest in technology and expand access to financial services to support economic activity and business development.
Commenting on the recognition, BML Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the ranking was based on an assessment of the bank's financial indicators against those of comparable institutions internationally.
"This listing reflects what our results have consistently demonstrated: BML is a financially strong, well-capitalised and well-managed institution. It demonstrates that our customers can bank with complete confidence and that we continue to deliver growth for our shareholders," Shareef said.
He added that the bank would continue strengthening its operations and investing in its workforce and technology.
"As the national bank, we remain committed to fulfilling our responsibility to the Maldivian economy, strengthening the bank's foundations, investing in our people and technology, and supporting the growth of businesses and communities."
BML said the recognition would encourage further improvements in its banking services for customers, shareholders and the wider Maldivian economy.
