An estimated MVR 58.8 billion is required to complete infrastructure projects being undertaken by the government this year, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said.
In a written response submitted to Parliament on Monday, Muththalib said the government's 2026 budget does not allocate specific amounts to individual infrastructure projects, as funding is provided through a programme-based budgeting system.
The minister made the remarks in response to questions submitted by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for Hulhumalé South, Dr Ahmed Shamheed.
Shamheed had sought clarification on the total estimated budget required to complete projects initiated under the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, as well as the amount allocated for those projects in the 2026 state budget.
In his response, Muththalib said the estimated funding requirement for completing the projects stood at MVR 58.8 billion.
However, he explained that the projects were being implemented under a programme budget rather than through separate budgetary allocations for each project.
The minister said the Ministry of Finance determines funding allocations for individual projects in accordance with the government's implementation plans.
"Accordingly, the Ministry of Finance allocates funding to projects based on the plans established for their implementation. Therefore, no specific amounts have been allocated to individual projects in the 2026 budget," Muththalib said in his written response.
