The tourism industry was responsible for creating the most number of jobs in the third quarter of the year, according to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)'s Quarterly Business Survey report.

The central bank issued the report saying that the country's economy grew by 10 percent in the third quarter.

However, the tourism industry did not grow in the third quarter compared to other industries that play an important role in the economy. The reason is that the number of tourists coming to Maldives had declined due to the off-season.

The report notes that the tourism industry did not grow in the third quarter but is expected to see growth in the last quarter of the year with the tourist peak season.

Resort bookings and expected revenue from the industry are also projected to increase as the number of tourists arriving in Maldives will increase especially with the winter holidays.

In addition:

  • Resort room rates are also expected to rise

  • The income of the industry's employees is also expected to increase

  • The tourism industry is also expected to grow in the fourth quarter

According to the Ministry of Tourism, 1.4 million tourists have visited Maldives so far this year. The government aims to attract 1.9 million tourists by the end of the year.
