A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday to develop a floating resort in Vaavu atoll, the first of its kind in the Maldives.
The agreement to build the floating resort in Vaavu atoll was signed between Lewini Hotels, a local company affiliated with foreigners and the atoll council.
The agreement was signed by:
-
President Ali Sujau on behalf of the Vaavu Atoll Council
-
Vice President of Lewini Hotels, Dr Warisa Limsakul and Managing Director Abdulla Rasheed
Speaking to Atoll Times after the signing ceremony, Sujau said this project can be done in this age of information and technology. He added that if anyone shows interest in such projects, that's the sign of its beginning and the opportunities should be facilitated.
"The nature of the Maldives has room for such projects, so if the investors are ready it should be done," Sujau said.
According to the agreement:
-
The floating resort is 6,038 square metres in size
-
It will be built in the outer lagoon area near V. Rakeedhoo; efforts are underway to choose two more locations
-
The resort will have 40 rooms
-
Each room is made to showcase the beauty of the sea underneath
-
Quality health services will be established; the aim is to make quality healthcare available for holiday goers
-
Five restaurants with a variety of cuisines
-
While two buildings are being constructed for employees, they are also being constructed with a wide range of services
-
Electricity will be generated by hydropower
Abdulla Rasheed of Lewini Hotels said that the decision to build a floating resort in the Maldives was made after reviewing such projects carried out in other countries extensively. He said the aim is to introduce a different concept to the Maldives.
"All resorts in the Maldives show the same thing; we have similar experiences everywhere. Therefore, we aim to introduce a difference and allow many foreigners to experience the Maldives with the difference," Rasheed said.
He said that although the project was delayed due to various reasons, the project will soon be in motion after the agreement with the atoll council and permits from the government.
Although the MoU for the project was signed, he did not disclose the details of the funds required for the project and how the project will be carried out.
