There are no obstacles to importing staple food items to Maldives, economic minister Mohamed Saeed said on Saturday.
The minister's comments come a day after India suspended exports of onions until March next year.
The minister said the government has taken steps to ensure food security for the people of Maldives.
In a post on 'X', Saeed said that Maldives will always be given priority by its allies.
“Changes in the global food market or export policies of individual countries happen at different times,” he said.
The minister said that President Mohamed Muizzu's top priority is to establish food security for the people and that can be achieved sustainably.
India is the largest producer and exporter of onions in the world. Onion prices have risen in the world market with such measures taken by the government. Recently, the Indian government has also raised the export price of a tonne of onion.
