Preparations are underway to open a branch of a Chinese bank, a first for the Maldives, foreign minister Moosa Zameer said on Saturday.
Speaking on Aslu TV, Zameer said the government was ready to sign an agreement with a Chinese bank to open a branch in Maldives.
Zameer said that during his recent visit to China, a bank from that country had expressed interest in opening a branch in Maldives. Maldivian ambassador in Beijing Fazeel Najeeb is working on relevant works, he added.
"With the president's last visit to China, there are talks of flights coming to Maldives from many Chinese cities. There are already 17 flights a week," Zameer explained.
Many development projects are already underway in Maldives with Chinese loans and grants. Maldives has also received the green signal to postpone its loan dues to China, President Mohamed Muizzu said on Friday.
