A fire broke out at a petrol shed and vessels docked near the harbour in F. Feeali on Thursday morning.

According to Feeali Island Council President Musa Ahmed, the fire started on a visiting vessel that had been docked at the shed for refuelling. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

He said the fire spread to nearby vessels shortly after it began.

“Shortly after the fire started on that vessel, it spread to nearby boats. Currently, four vessels docked at the harbour are on fire,” Musa said.

He added that efforts are ongoing to recover property and equipment.

The fire has also spread to the island’s water desalination plant located near the harbour.

Feeali does not have a firefighting system. A team from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is travelling from F. Nilandhoo to assist in controlling the fire.

No further details were available at the time of reporting.
