Maldives on August 19 transferred over MVR 19 million in donations to UNRWA, the United Nations relief agency for Palestinians in need.

The funds were collected during the "Maldives with Palestine" telethon, organized by the Public Service Media (PSM) on June 12. The telethon marked a unified national effort, with contributions flowing in from individuals, companies, and government agencies across the nation.

The one-day event saw Maldivians from all walks of life come together to contribute to the cause. Government and private sector donations played a substantial role in reaching the impressive total of MVR 19.3 million, which translates to approximately USD 1.25 million. This donation, according to government officials, was intended to directly support Palestinians in need through Anra’s relief programs.

Bank documents shared with the media confirmed the transaction, with a copy of the telegraphic transfer (TT) form from the Ministry of Finance serving as official documentation of the transfer. The transaction was facilitated through the Central Bank of Maldives, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), ensuring a smooth and transparent transfer in US dollars.

PSM initially handed over the collected funds to the government in July, marking the final step in the fundraising campaign. In a statement underscoring the nation’s commitment to transparency, government officials confirmed that Crowe Maldives conducted an independent audit of the telethon, reviewing the inflow of donations and ensuring the funds reached their intended destination.
