Fayyaz says interested in presidency, but no decision on 2028
Fayyaz acknowledged his ambition but emphasised that he has not yet made a definitive decision.
Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail on Tuesday expressed his interest in running for the presidency, though he remains undecided about contesting the 2028 presidential election.
In an interview with Adhadhu, Fayyaz acknowledged his ambition but emphasised that he has not yet made a definitive decision.
“A lot of people will say I don't have that kind of interest, you know? I have an interest. But that doesn't mean I'm determined to do it in 2028,” Fayyaz remarked, highlighting his openness to the idea while refraining from committing to a timeline.
Fayyaz underscored the party’s strength in its democratic values.
“The MDP has good leaders, and a democratic primary will be held to find the best leader,” he said.
The MDP has faced internal challenges in recent years, particularly after the defeat of former President Mohamed Nasheed in the presidential primary in 2023.
However, Fayyaz expressed confidence in the party's resilience and evolution.
“President Nasheed is a very strong leader. Even if that happened then, I can't believe it will happen again. Now this is not a party that relies on one very strong leader. It relies on policies,” he stated.
Rumours of other prominent MDP figures eyeing the presidency have also surfaced, including MDP President and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and former Vice President Faisal Naseem. While none of these figures have officially announced their candidacy, their potential participation could shape a dynamic race for the party's nomination.
