Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern that flooding incidents, such as the one experienced in Male on Friday, will become more frequent if global warming continues unchecked.

Heavy rains caused significant flooding in the capital, resulting in damage to vehicles, property, and homes. Roads were submerged, and vehicles were left stranded or floating in waterlogged areas.

Nasheed, who serves as the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), shared a video of the flooding on social media platform X. He stated that the event highlights the growing impact of climate change and warned that such occurrences could become more common as global temperatures rise.

He also commented on the broader implications of climate change, noting that countries like the Maldives, which contribute minimally to global emissions, are forced to bear the consequences without adequate compensation. Nasheed emphasised that the Maldives cannot rely on the establishment of a loss and damage fund to address climate-related challenges.

"Maldives cannot expect any Loss and Damage funds. We had no part in causing this but have to pay for it. That is the injustice of climate change," Nasheed stated.

Efforts to address the flooding in Male are ongoing, with authorities working to mitigate the impact on residents and infrastructure.
