Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon is set to visit India this week on his first official visit since assuming office.
The visit, scheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday, aims to strengthen military and security cooperation between the Maldives and India.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel, in an interview with Indian news outlet WION on Saturday during his first official visit to New Delhi, stated that the visit would enhance bilateral defence ties.
As part of ongoing discussions between the two nations, changes have been made regarding the operation of Indian-donated military equipment in the Maldives. Indian troops stationed in the country have been replaced by civilian personnel to operate the military helicopter and Dornier aircraft provided by India. This aligns with President Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to ensure no foreign military forces are stationed in the Maldives.
The Maldives and India have been working to rebuild their relationship, which experienced some strain earlier in the current administration. The bilateral ties have seen progress, including the signing of a currency swap agreement during President Muizzu's visit to India in October, aimed at improving the Maldives’ financial situation.
