
Foundation laid for Ihavandhoo fisheries complex
The foundation stone was laid by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, MIFCO CEO Dr. Vitaly Lubimov, and Ihavandhoo Island Council President Ahmed Sobah.
The foundation stone for a state-of-the-art fisheries complex in Ihavandhoo was laid on Wednesday.
The project, with financial assistance from the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), is expected to commence active construction in May and be completed within 18 months.
The foundation stone was laid by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, MIFCO CEO Dr. Vitaly Lubimov, and Ihavandhoo Island Council President Ahmed Sobah.
The event was part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to the Haa Alif atoll, during which he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the fisheries sector.
The MVR 474 million project includes:

MVR 416 million allocated for the construction of the fisheries complex

MVR 58 million for the development of a dedicated harbour
The Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex will be equipped with:

1,000-tonne cold storage facility

50-tonne brine freeze facility

Office building and engine house

Vehicle workshop and warehouse

Three 3.5-meter-deep fish weighing platforms

A 30-meter-long road platform
Ihavandhoo is widely recognized for its strong fishing industry, and this complex is expected to enhance fish processing, storage, and trade in the region. President Muizzu highlighted that the project will create around 150 new job opportunities, providing a significant economic boost for the local community.
