Shaheed appointed as SC representative in judicial watchdog
He was appointed as a Supreme Court judge on 19 March.
Justice Hussain Shaheed has been appointed to represent the Supreme Court in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) following the resignation of a former judge.
Shaheed was recently appointed as a Supreme Court judge after his nomination was approved by Parliament. His appointment filled the vacancy created by the resignation of former Justice Husnu Suood. The JSC, responsible for overseeing the judiciary, interviewed candidates and recommended Shaheed’s name for the position. He was appointed as a Supreme Court judge on 19 March.
Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Shaheed served as Chief Justice of the High Court and was a High Court judge for over seven years. His judicial career includes:
-
Sworn in as a High Court judge on 24 July 2018
-
Temporarily assigned as Chief Justice of the High Court on 18 November 2022
-
Officially appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court on 30 October 2023
The JSC is a constitutional commission responsible for regulating the judiciary, including judicial appointments, investigations, and removals. Its current members include:
-
Hussain Riza Adam (Chairman)
-
High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz (Vice President)
-
Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla
-
Civil Court Judge Farhad Rasheed (representing lower court judges)
-
Dr. Aminath Kulsoom (public representative)
-
CSC President Mohamed Naseeh
-
Yazmeed Mohamed (Presidential nominee)
-
Attorney General Ahmed Usham
-

The vacancy in the JSC follows the resignation of Husnu Suood after allegations of executive influence over the Supreme Court. Additionally, Justices Mahaz Ali Zahir and Azmiralda Zahir were indefinitely suspended. Their suspension came as the court was set to hear a case related to constitutional amendments concerning parliamentary seat loss due to party expulsions.
