Nearly 500,000 trees planted under 5 million tree programme
According to the ninistry, organisations have so far pledged to plant a total of 5.2 million trees across the country.

A total of 498,968 trees have been planted under the government’s Five Million Tree Programme, according to the environment ministry.
The tree-planting initiative was announced by President Mohamed Muizzu during the 2023 COP28 climate summit in Dubai. Speaking at the event, President Muizzu stated that the project aimed to improve the environmental condition of island communities across the Maldives.
The programme was officially launched on Environment Day in 2024. Since its launch, a number of state-owned enterprises and private organisations have participated in planting efforts.
According to the ninistry, organisations have so far pledged to plant a total of 5.2 million trees across the country.
Pledges by participating entities include:

Housing Development Corporation (HDC): 1 million trees

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL): 1 million trees

Regional Airports Company: 600,000 trees

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO): 500,000 trees

SDM Farm: 750,000 trees

Other institutions, associations and companies: 1.3 million trees
The initiative forms part of the Maldives' broader efforts to address the impacts of climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
