
Soneva Fushi fined MVR 448,375 for entry into protected area

Soneva Fushi resort has been fined MVR 448,375 for unauthorised entry into the protected B. Nelivaru region with tourists in December 2024.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated today that a total of 10 individuals, including Soneva Fushi employees and tourists, entered the protected area on 18 December after 6 pm without obtaining permission from the B Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office.
The EPA noted that B. Nelivaru is a designated protected area. A letter was sent to Soneva Fushi on 11 June 2024, warning that action would be taken against any illegal activities conducted within the area.
The EPA identified several violations committed during the incident, including:

Illegal entry into the protected area, admitted by those involved

Use of artificial lighting at night

Behaviour that disturbed the local wildlife and environment

Acts of arson and handling of fire, admitted by those involved
According to the EPA, representatives from the Biosphere Reserve Office and the police visited B. Nelivaru on the day of the incident. Despite instructions, Soneva Fushi employees did not vacate the area with the tourists.
The EPA has instructed Soneva Fushi to pay the fine through Bandeyri Pay within 30 days from 23 April 2025.
