Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib on Monday announced that the registration of land recipients from Gulhifalhu will be handed over next month.

The government has decided to allocate more than 2,000 plots of land under the Binveriya scheme initiated by the previous administration. It has also been decided to transfer the land of 1,347 individuals who were awarded plots in Giraavaru to Gulhifalhu.

The draw for land recipients was conducted in October last year. However, the registration of the land has not yet been completed.

In response to a question from Hithadhoo South MDP MP Ibrahim Nazil regarding the date of the handover, Minister Muththalib said that 9,031 plots would be handed over under the landowner scheme. The allocation is as follows:

  • 1,407 plots in Hulhumalé

  • 2,438 plots in Gulhifalhu

  • 5,187 plots in Giraavaru

Minister Muththalib stated that delays were due to ongoing work in the dredged areas. He added that the ministry is working to amend the plan to expedite the handover process.

“By May, we will start handing over the registries of the land to the people,” he said.

According to the Housing Ministry’s released list, the distribution of land by plot size is as follows:

  • 669 lots of 1,250 square feet

  • 1,234 lots of 1,650 square feet

  • 916 lots of 2,050 square feet

  • 473 lots of 2,450 square feet

  • 158 lots of 2,850 square feet

  • 49 lots of 3,250 square feet

  • 21 lots of 3,650 square feet

Dredging at Gulhifalhu began in June 2020 under the main commercial port relocation project. Ahead of the presidential election, then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to reserve part of the area for residential land allocation.

Meanwhile, in his Presidential Statement at the opening of this year’s Parliament, President Muizzu announced plans to implement an additional 4,000 housing units in Gulhifalhu with the support of a soft loan from India.
