President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding media freedom, independence, and accountability.
In a message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, President Muizzu underscored the significance of journalistic ethics and the dissemination of verified information. He also described freedom of the press as an integral part of freedom of expression, which he said is necessary for establishing a transparent and accountable environment.
"I wish to use this occasion to commend journalists worldwide for their tenacity and courage to produce valid and reliable reports consistently. Their efforts go a long way in ensuring the health of our democratic societies, safeguarding human dignity and promoting justice," he said.

President Muizzu noted that AI, if used appropriately, could support the media by automating information analysis, enabling remote content delivery, and identifying misinformation. He also highlighted the Maldives' collaboration with national and international partners, including the Press Freedom Coalition and civil society organisations, to promote media literacy and encourage responsible use of AI in line with journalistic standards.
