Abdullah Ibrahim, 38, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for smuggling over 80 kilogrammes of drugs into Addu City.

Ibrahim, also known as Abucha, was apprehended on 4 October 2020 while attempting to bring the drugs ashore at Hithadhoo. According to police, he was travelling in a dinghy and refused to stop when officers attempted to intervene. Officers subsequently entered the water and detained him.

He was charged on 30 November 2020 with two counts of trafficking drugs.

Ibrahim entered a guilty plea and signed a plea agreement with the Prosecutor General’s Office. The charges carry a combined maximum sentence of 50 years. However, under the plea agreement, the sentence was reduced to 25 years.

The Criminal Court handed down the sentence, taking into account the time Ibrahim has already spent in custody. He has now served four years and faces 21 more years in prison.
