The Criminal Court on Sunday extended the remand of a Bangladeshi national arrested last month in connection with the alleged illegal import of cigarettes into the Maldives without the required permits.
The suspect, Abdul Kareem, 45, was arrested on the 24th of last month. His initial 15-day remand expired, and he was presented before the court for a remand hearing.
According to police, 32 cartons of Manchester brand cigarettes were recovered from a boat at the Thilafushi shipyard. Kareem was arrested in connection with the case.
Police further stated that Kareem is in the Maldives without legal documents and is considered an undocumented migrant.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
