Parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of Tax Appeal Tribunal President and former Supreme Court Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed as the Chief Justice.

The position became vacant following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on 21 July.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended Ghani for the post, and the Judiciary Committee endorsed the nomination on Monday. During Tuesday's parliamentary sitting, 62 members voted in favour of the appointment. No members voted against.

Ghani began his judicial career in 2000 as a Civil Court judge, serving until 2004. He was then appointed to the High Court, where he served until 2018, including as a senior judge.

He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2018 to fill a vacancy that arose following the ruling issued on 1 February of that year. However, he was removed from the bench in 2019 when the government and parliamentary majority shifted. At the time, the entire Supreme Court bench was replaced, citing a report on the conduct of the former court.

Following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Justice Abdulla Hameed has been overseeing the administration of the Supreme Court on an interim basis.

The current members of the Supreme Court bench include:

  • Justice Abdulla Hameed

  • Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed

  • Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain

  • Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim

  • Justice Hussain Rasheed

  • Justice Mohamed Saleem
