Police have reported that 22 individuals were fined a total of MVR 127,000 last month for offences related to the use and sale of vape products.

The import, use, and sale of vape products have been prohibited in the Maldives since December. Amendments to the Tobacco Control Act introduced fines for various related activities.

According to statistics released by police for July:

  • MVR 62,000 was collected in fines for using vape products

  • MVR 7,000 was collected for selling or purchasing vape products

  • MVR 58,000 was collected for possession of vape products

Under the amended legislation:

  • Importing vaping devices and related products carries a fine of MVR 50,000, with an additional fine of up to MVR 10,000 per imported device

  • Selling these products carries a fine of MVR 20,000, with up to MVR 10,000 per item sold

  • Distributing such products without charge results in a fine of MVR 10,000

  • Distributing or selling to minors incurs an additional fine of MVR 50,000

  • Personal use of vape products is subject to a fine of MVR 5,000
