Abdulla Maahil Shaheem, a member of the Presidential Advisory Youth Assembly, resigned from the body on Sunday after being fined for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of vape products into the Maldives.
Maahil and another individual were detained by customs officers at Velana International Airport on Thursday night. Sources confirmed that a significant quantity of vape equipment was seized from the two men.
Maahil had been appointed to the Youth Assembly on 12 August 2024.
Following amendments to the Tobacco Control Act last year, the import and use of vape products are prohibited in the Maldives. The law prescribes heavy fines, including:
-
Importing vaping devices and related products can result in fines of up to MVR 50,000.
-
Each imported electronic cigarette or vaping device can carry a fine of up to MVR 10,000.
Based on the legal provisions, Maahil faces fines exceeding MVR 1.05 million, with the total penalties for both men surpassing MVR 2 million.
