Police fine 30 in August for vape violations

The Maldives Police have taken action against 30 people last month for offences related to vaping and e-cigarettes.

The use and import of vaping devices have been banned in the Maldives since 15 December. Under the law, significant fines are imposed for violations.

Police records show 11 cases involving the use and possession of vapes and e-cigarettes last month. Of those, 16 individuals were fined for possession, and 14 were fined for use.

The fines imposed totalled MVR 150,000, of which MVR 85,000 was for vaping and MVR 65,000 for possession.

According to amendments made to the Tobacco Control Act, the following fines apply:

  • Importing vaping devices or related products: MVR 50,000, with up to MVR 10,000 per device.

  • Selling such devices or products: MVR 20,000, with up to MVR 10,000 per item.

  • Distributing them free of charge: MVR 10,000.

  • Selling or distributing them to a child: an additional MVR 50,000.

  • Using such products: MVR 5,000.

Police stated that enforcement will continue under the amended law.
