Ex-minister Mahloof resigns from MDP
Mahloof’s future political direction has not yet been announced, though he has recently attended meetings held by the Solih faction.
Former Youth Minister and two-term MP Ahmed Mahloof has resigned from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Mahloof submitted his resignation letter on Monday to the party’s chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail. The letter did not state a reason for his decision.
In his message, Mahloof thanked the party for the opportunity to serve for 15 years. He said he was satisfied with the work carried out by the Cabinet under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and apologised to any members who might be unhappy with his departure.
Mahloof’s future political direction has not yet been announced, though he has recently attended meetings held by the Solih faction.
He began his political career with the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and was elected to the 17th Parliament on a DRP ticket. He later joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), formed in 2011 after divisions within the DRP.
Mahloof left the PPM during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen, citing dissatisfaction with developments at the time, and became active in opposition activities. He joined the MDP following the 2018 presidential election and was appointed Minister of Youth in the subsequent MDP-led government.
