Diving banned off Dhonfanu amid protests over cancelled reclamation project

Diving and snorkelling have been temporarily banned in part of the waters surrounding B. Dhonfanu due to protests over the government’s decision not to carry out a land reclamation project on the island.

The project was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a visit to the atoll last month. However, following concerns from environmental organisations and sections of the public that reclamation could harm the biosphere reserve and affect tourism, the government has decided not to proceed.

The Dhonfanu Council announced on Thursday that diving and snorkelling would be prohibited in a 700-metre area from the island’s shoreline. The council said the restriction was linked to ongoing protests against the government’s decision and would remain in place until further notice.

According to the council, demonstrations will continue along the 700-metre stretch of coastline, and diving activities in the area are considered unsafe during this period. Authorities will be notified if the order is violated.

President Muizzu has stated that reclamation was initially planned at the request of island residents and cancelled after receiving information that it was no longer required. The Dhonfanu Council, however, has said the government made its decision without consultation and denied that residents had asked for the project to be stopped.
