A government delegation has departed on a foreign tour to defend the media regulation bill ratified by President Mohamed Muizzu last week.

The bill, which became law last week despite opposition from journalists and international organisations, has drawn criticism from outlets including Al Jazeera.

According to sources, the delegation first travelled to Sri Lanka, where it held meetings with local journalists at the Maldivian Embassy in Colombo. Ambassador Masood Imad also participated in the discussions.

The delegation comprises Ahmed Shiyan, Head of the Multilateral Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Maziya Abdul Sattar, State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Office; and Nasheeth Nasheed, Deputy Minister of Tourism.

Following the meetings, several Sri Lankan newspapers published articles presenting the government’s position on the new law.

Sources confirmed that the delegation has since departed Sri Lanka, with India identified as its next destination. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on the matter.
