Serious allegations have been levelled against Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, accusing him of attempting to destroy evidence and misuse his position in a case involving his son.
A letter detailing the allegations was sent to the Chair of Parliament’s Committee on Security Services (the 241 Committee), Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, on Saturday. The letter has since circulated on social media.
According to the letter, Farhad allegedly intervened in two separate cases involving his son — one concerning a traffic offence and assault of a police officer, and another related to sexual assault allegations.
The letter claims that Farhad’s son was arrested for driving a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol without a valid licence. The registration number displayed on the vehicle reportedly belonged to another motorcycle. The letter further alleges that Farhad used his position to influence the handling of the case.
It states that Farhad contacted the Chief Inspector of Traffic Police in Hulhumalé, requesting the release of his son’s motorcycle. When questioned, he allegedly said he could act as he wished at the police station and later contacted officers in the police technology department to facilitate the removal of the motorcycle from impound before the 15-day holding period expired.
The letter also claims that the case had been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) but was returned to police because crucial evidence had been destroyed. The PGO reportedly noted Farhad’s involvement in that process.
Farhad has not commented publicly on the allegations.
The Deputy Commissioner was promoted from Assistant Commissioner last year while a Police Board decision concerning his earlier dismissal was pending in court. The High Court has since ruled that the Police Board’s earlier decision to dismiss several senior officers was invalid, citing procedural abuse in the promotion process.
