President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday announced plans to construct 7,000 new housing units in the Malé area and to open applications soon for land plots in the region.

Speaking at the Republic Day ceremony held at the Social Centre, President Muizzu said that several initiatives are underway to address housing challenges in the capital and surrounding islands.

He said that 15,000 land plots will be allocated within the next five months, while 850 housing units have already been awarded in 13 islands across the country.

“I am launching key projects in the city this year to fulfil my housing pledge,” he said, adding that further details will be announced soon.

The President stated that agreements will be signed for 3,000 housing units within the remaining six months of this year, while an additional 4,000 units are being developed under the Indian credit line, alongside projects supported by other countries.

He said dredging works have been initiated to support land allocation, including:

  • Ongoing dredging in Hulhumalé Phase 3, which resumed on Monday

  • A newly signed agreement to dredge the remaining area of Gulhifalhu, with work beginning this month

  • Dredging of Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) to commence before the end of the year

  • Ongoing dredging in three areas of Rasmalé, with the pace to be tripled next month

According to the President, 1,100 hectares will be reclaimed in Rasmalé to provide a long-term solution to housing shortages in the region.

He added that 15,000 plots will be distributed to Malé residents within five months, prioritising individuals aged 18 and above who have not previously received housing.

The government will also allocate land for employees in different institutions and sectors.

In addition, the President reaffirmed that individuals listed under former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration who were not allocated Hiyaa flats during the previous government will receive housing in line with his commitment.

“Applications for the family housing policy will open soon as part of the plan to ensure housing for all,” President Muizzu said.
