A woman who underwent an emergency caesarean section at the International Medical and Diagnostic Centre (IMDC) in Addu has died.

The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Aishath Nazaahath Ahmed Didi of Tamanna, S. Hithadhoo. She was admitted to the facility after her due date.

IMDC said in a statement that she died early Monday morning while receiving treatment.

According to the statement, the woman had been scheduled to give birth this morning and had been in stable condition prior to the incident. She had also expressed satisfaction with the medical team.

Her condition changed suddenly at 4:39am. IMDC said this development had not been observed in her earlier examinations. She was immediately transferred to the emergency room, where treatment began, followed by an emergency operation supported by the full operating theatre team.

The baby was delivered safely, but medical staff were unable to save the mother.

IMDC stated that this is the first such case reported since the introduction of its obstetrics and gynaecology service. The centre said it remains committed to providing safe services and will continue to do so.

“We extend our condolences to the family and pray for the deceased,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Health and relevant agencies are investigating the case. IMDC said it is cooperating with the inquiry and assisting the family.
