A man has been arrested on suspicion of compromising another person’s Viber account and using it to obtain money through fraudulent messages, police said Friday.

Ahmed Hassan, 33, of Malé Hiyaa 1-16-03, was taken into custody on Thursday under a court warrant. The arrest followed a complaint lodged with the Police Anti-Scam Centre on the 30th of last month.

According to police, the suspect is accused of accessing a Viber account belonging to another individual and contacting various people in that person’s name to fraudulently obtain more than MVR 150,000 on multiple occasions.

Police said a total of MVR 150,300 was taken through the alleged scam, of which MVR 75,000 has been recovered.

The court has ordered a 15-day remand. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
