Police sergeant arrested over missing cigarettes

A police sergeant has been arrested in relation to the disappearance of cartons of cigarettes kept in the custody of the Villimale’ Police Station.
Police confirmed the arrest and identified the officer as Munawwar Adam, 39, of Shabnameege/Adh. Dhigurah, who serves as a senior sergeant. The officer has been suspended while the case is under inquiry.
According to police, the investigation is being carried out jointly with the National Integrity Commission.
The cartons in question were held at the Villimale’ Police Station and handed over to Customs on the 12th of last month. Police earlier stated that 32 cartons were seized from a foreign national on 23 May on suspicion of illegal importation. However, six cartons were later found to be missing.
Police further noted that an additional 31 cartons were recovered from two foreign nationals on 23 December as part of ongoing operations.
Investigations are continuing.
